Butterfly

Just living is not enough... One must have sunshine, freedom and a little flower ~Hans Christian Andersen~

Among the greatest gifts my sister Terry has ever given me was teaching me how to sift through racks and heaps of clothes at thrift stores and flea markets. It takes time and practice, but it pays off in a big way. Your eye becomes trained to pick out treasures among a lot of potential trash and eventually you're able to quickly sort out the silk from the synthetics.

The way I see it, older clothes or what is better known to us Kenyans as mitumba, if in good condition, are generally made with much better construction and quality than a whole lot of the new clothes sold at boutiques and department stores. You can also usually find some vintage designer gems if you get lucky and if you look hard enough; Terry and I have a couple of designer items in our closets which cost us less than Kshs. 500 ($4.89 USD)... Whoop! Whoop!

Very important, this I should mention, when thrifting, if you find a piece of cloth with a salvageable stain or perhaps a hem that's too long, it's nothing that can't be fixed. And if you find something that's way too big or too small, but has a fabulous print or fabric, there's always D.I.Y to reclaim it, case in point, the one shoulder butterfly top I'm wearing today was initially a romper, it turned out to be super short and I knew for a fact that I would never wear it out in public, so I simply cut the lower part and took it to a local tailor to sew it up so it could appear as it does now.

Top - D.I.Y |  Skirt - Vivo Activewear | Shoes - Flea market along Moi Avenue |  Earrings - Super Cosmetics

I apologize for my unannounced absence on here, I've been really busy with school work lately. You know, funny thing, when I was a freshman I used to imagine that my fourth year in campus would be a breeze haha! Shock on me!

I hope you started off the month of October on a good note and all is well with you, your friends and family. Happy Tuesday! And to my fellow Kenyans, Happy Mashujaa Day! :-)
